Our tips and tricks for restoring your hair health
Going from brunette to platinum blonde to turquoise blue and back again? Sure, why not! Spending every weekend floating in a chlorinated pool under the sun’s intense rays? That’s what summer’s made for, right? Nobody’s saying you should let your hair get in the way of your life—but subjecting it to damage week after week does catch up with tresses. Fortunately, Aveda offers tips and products that can restore your locks to Rapunzel-worthy health in no time.
Eat a balanced diet
You already know eating right is important for your health, but did you know it’s good for your hair, too? Hair can’t grow without proper nutrition. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and powerful anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric. Or you can put turmeric right where it counts: on your hair, using Aveda’s Invati Thickening Conditioner. It contains organic turmeric, ginseng and other Ayurvedic herbs, as well as soy protein and naturally derived amino acids to thicken hair from within.
Get your blood pumping
Exercise gets your heart rate up and delivers additional oxygen, vitamins and minerals to all parts of your body—scalp included. That increased blood flow rushes to the follicles and helps healthy hair grow. Aim to get your sweat on at least three times a week. For extra credit, treat your scalp to a massage. Scalp massage gives your hair all the benefits exercise does—plus, it feels fantastic. Following a shampoo, massage in your scalp with Scalp Benefits Balancing Conditioner to create the ideal foundation for healthy hair.
Switch to a gentle shampoo
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is the same detergent used for heavy-duty machinery—why would you put it on your hair? None of Aveda’s shampoos contain SLS, but to pamper extra-stressed tresses, try Damage Remedy Restructuring Shampoo, which includes quinoa protein to repair and strength frazzled hair.
Shampoo less often
Did you know you don’t need to shampoo hair every day? Doing so can strip hair of the natural oils that keep it moist and protected, leading to additional damage. If you feel greasy after skipping the suds, use Shampure™ Dry Shampoo to absorb excess oil between washes.
Give your blow-dryer the day off
If you air-dry your tresses only occasionally, they’ll thank you. We swear by Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Cream, which contains nourishing cupuacu and shea butters to heal hair and fight frizz (no flat iron required). When you do bust out the blow-dryer, be sure to use Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother first—it protects against surface damage from heat styling.
Keep the end in sight
The end of your hair, that is! The tips of your strands are the oldest part of the hair—which means they’re the likeliest to split. Fortunately, Trios now offers split end repair, which provides a fix to dry, frazzled ends. Looking for a long-term solution and a new ’do? Ask your stylist for a trim. Your hair will look thicker and healthier, and you’ll prevent the split from traveling up the length of the hair shaft.
Treat yourself
Well, your hair, that is. Request a Botanical Therapy Repair Treatment from your stylist—it harnesses the power of quinoa protein and sugar beet-derived amino acid to improve damaged hair up to 84 percent ($50, or $25 added on to any hair service). Keep the love going with weekly at-home treatments like Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment. Ideal for colored hair, it contains sunflower and macadamia nut oils to seal the cuticle and Morikue protein complex to help strengthen hair. Besides, it’s a great excuse to be good to yourself.
